A brutal murder in North Gyeongsang again points out the dangers and risks that are still prevalent in international marriages in Korea. According to regional police, a 37-year-old man surnamed Lim stabbed his 23-year-old Vietnamese wife, identified as Hwang, multiple times with a knife, killing her at about 1 a.m. yesterday. Afterward, Lim left his home, shouting, “I have killed someone!” Hwang gave birth to a boy just 19 days prior. Upon hearing Lim’s cries, neighbors called the police, who said they found Lim wandering near his one-room apartment with the murder weapon in hand. After entering the apartment, the police found Hwang’s body lying in a pool of blood with her infant son crying beside her. Police said Lim testified that he argued with his wife often since their marriage in April 2010 and that they had fought before he killed her yesterday. The murder echoed a similar killing 10 months ago when a man with a history of mental illness killed his 20-year-old Vietnamese bride eight days after their marriage. The man, surnamed Chang, was sentenced to 12 years in prison last year. After that murder, the Korean government adopted new precautions for international brides who mostly come from Southeast Asia to find Korean husbands. According to the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, a health exam is mandatory for prospective brides and grooms. “Last year when we were drawing up a new policy for international marriages, there was discussion of including [in the clauses] mental health history, including treatment,” said a ministry official. “That plan fell through due to complications.” The official said that it was the ministry’s duty to protect women in international marriages and that it is looking into the situation. By Christine Kim [christine.kim@joongang.co.kr] 한글 관련 기사 [연합] 베트남 신부 입국 9개월만에 싸늘한 시신으로 베트남 출신 여성이 한국에 시집온 지 9개월만에 남편에 의해 살해돼 주위를 안타깝게 하고 있다. 24일 오전 1시10분께 경북 청도군의 한 원룸에서 임모(37)씨가 베트남 출신 아내 황모(23)씨를 흉기로 마구 찔러 살해했다. 경찰은 사건 직후 원룸에서 200ｍ 떨어진 지하도에서 속옷 차림으로 흉기를 들고 배회하던 임씨를 붙잡아 정확한 사건 경위를 조사 중이다. 숨진 황씨는 작년 4월 베트남 현지에서 임씨와 결혼식을 올린 뒤 같은해 8월 3일 국내에 들어왔으며 올해는 다문화가족지원센터의 한국어 교실에도 부지런히 다녔다고 한다. 황씨는 입국 후 시댁에서 살았으나 집안 내 문제로 작년 10월 5일부터 11월 22일까지 경북지역의 한 이주여성 쉼터에서 생활하기도 했다. 쉼터 관계자는 "상담해본 결과 가정폭력은 없었고 가족 간의 다른 문제로 경찰의 도움으로 쉼터로 찾아왔다가 남편과 함께 가정으로 다시 돌아갔다"고 말했다. 쉼터에서 나오면서 황씨는 시댁에서 분가해 그동안 원룸에서 생활해왔으며 지난 5일에는 남자 아이를 출산했다. 황씨는 올해 3월 16일부터는 청도군다문화가족지원센터에서 운영하는 한국어교실에도 등록해 매주 2차례씩 열심히 한국어를 배웠다고 한다. 센터 관계자는 "출산 직전까지 수업에 열심히 나왔다"며 "지난 5일 전화를 걸어 다음날 수업에 나올 수 있느냐고 물으니 '아기가 나왔어요, 못가요'라고 대답했다"고 전했다. 이 관계자는 또 "한국어를 잘하지 못해 대화를 많이 나눌 기회는 없었는데 특별한 점은 발견하지 못했다"며 안타까워했다. 청도군 관계자는 "쉼터에서 돌아온 뒤에는 가족들이 서로 이해하면서 잘 살아보려했던 것으로 알고 있다"며 "한국어 교실도 열심히 다녔고 지난달 청도소싸움축제때는 수강생들과 함께 행사장 견학을 나오기도 했다"고 말했다. 경찰 관계자는 "남편 임씨가 집에서 부부싸움을 하던 중 이혼문제가 나오자 격분해 아내를 때리고 흉기로 찔러 살해했다고 진술했다"며 "임씨는 대구의 국제결혼업체의 소개로 아내와 결혼했다"고 말했다.
