Vietnamese occupy 1/3 of babies born to multicultural Korean families:
statistics Vietnamese women gave birth to more than one third of babies
born to marriages between Koreans and spouses from abroad last year,
Statistics Korea said Sunday.
As many as 7,880 children born to multicultural families had Vietnamese
mothers last year, accounting for 35.8 percent of the total 22,000 babies
born to families consisting of Koreans and foreign spouses, the statistical
office said.
The comparable figures in 2010 and 2009 were 34.5 percent and 35.2
percent, respectively.
Chinese wives of Korean men followed last year with 26.4 percent. The
Philippines came third with 8.1 percent, Cambodia fourth with 5.3 percent,
Japan fifth with 3.7 percent and Mongolia sixth with 1.3 percent.
Of the total 22,000 babies born to multicultural families last year, 84.5
percent had Korean fathers, down from 87.2 percent in 2010.
About 4.9 percent had Chinese fathers, 3.5 percent American and 1.8
